ChaplainUSA Seeks Writers

Who we are

We are ChaplainUSA, a non-profit educational organization for chaplains who work with first responders (police, fire, EMS, Survivors).

How we help chaplains

We share wisdom from one generation of chaplains to the next through the Police Chaplain Project, a digital archive.

We help keep chaplains informed on a whole range of topics related to their work, including crisis events, treatments for PTSD and new strategies for coping with stress or grief.

Because chaplains are really busy, we try to make information easy-to-digest. In most cases, we like to format information In the form of a Chaplain Summary.

What is a Chaplain Summary?

A Chaplain Summary transforms a book, a YouTube video, a news article, website or research paper into an easy to read summary of around 600-800 words.

A summary is broken into 3 parts:

Introduction: explain what you are summarizing and why it’s important.

Key takeaways: Five is always a management number of takeaways. Give each a subhead and a paragraph or two.

Call to Action: The content into actionable information. Give the reader a link to take the next step: “Here’s how you get started building K9 PTSD Support Program.”

[Always cite the source material and provide links to organizations mentioned in the summary. ]

Style Guide

Keep the writing conversational and direct. Chaplains are a practicable bunch, they're looking for information they can use on the job.

Our information is supplemental to formal training or continuing education. In other words, if someone reads what you write, it’s because they want to read it.

Content has to be appealing.

Essentials only.

Make it easy to scan and digest, using sub-heads and bullet points to break the info into sections.

Read some great blogs.

ChaplainUSA favors an informal, lively style. The best way to get a feel for what we mean, read:

Rule of Thumb

If you can make someone read what you have written all the way to the end – you are a writer.
