Chaplain Mary Nobbe

Chaplain & comfort-dog specialist

Chaplain Mary Nobbe is a law enforcement chaplain with Law Enforcement Chaplaincy Sacramento (LECS) who specializes in canine-assisted crisis intervention. Working alongside specially trained comfort dogs, including K-9 Chaplain Sophie, she provides trauma-informed pastoral care to victims of violent crime, grieving families, first responders, and children navigating acute tragedy.

Canine-Assisted Crisis Response and Non-Verbal Care

Through her work with LECS, Chaplain Nobbe has helped pioneer the integration of comfort dogs into emergency services, court proceedings, and crisis debriefings. In high-stress situations where individuals—particularly children and victims of severe trauma—are non-verbal or overwhelmed by grief, her comfort dogs serve as a gentle, non-threatening bridge to connection.

In her feature interviews with ChaplainUSA’s Police Chaplain Project, Chaplain Nobbe explores the unique psychology of canine comfort in public safety:

Breaking Through Acute Shock: Demonstrating how a calm canine presence helps lower elevated heart rates, soothe hypervigilance, and break through emotional paralysis when words are difficult or impossible.

Supporting Vulnerable Populations: Facilitating trust and open communication among children, crime victims, and hospital patients during critical investigations and hospital visitations.

First-Responder Wellness: Bringing comfort dogs into station houses and dispatch centers to help officers and staff process cumulative trauma and operational stress following difficult shifts.

Building Trust Across the Community

Beyond emergency scene deployments, Chaplain Nobbe and her canine partners regularly represent public safety chaplaincy at community events, school crisis responses, and agency debriefings. By offering reassurance without demanding performance or speech, her work highlights an essential dimension of modern chaplaincy: meeting people in pain precisely where they are, using every available tool to offer comfort, restore calm, and build lasting trust.
