Before relocating to Colorado, Wasmundt built a strong foundation in public safety chaplaincy in Nebraska, serving the Lincoln Police & Fire Department as well as Nebraska Public Safety. His long tenure across municipal, state, and regional agencies has established him as a trusted voice in first-responder wellness, peer support, and crisis intervention.

Response to the Century 16 Movie Theater Mass Shooting

On July 20, 2012, tragedy struck the city of Aurora, Colorado, during a midnight premiere screening at the Century 16 Movie Theater. Dressed in tactical gear, a lone gunman entered the crowded theater, released gas grenades, and opened fire on the audience. The attack resulted in 12 fatalities and 70 injuries—58 from gunfire—making it one of the most severe mass shootings in regional history.

As a chaplain with the Aurora Police Department, Wasmundt deployed directly into the wake of the disaster. Working alongside officers, detectives, dispatchers, and emergency medical personnel, he provided vital emotional and spiritual support during the immediate response and long-term recovery efforts.

Critical Incident Support and Long-Term Recovery

Responding to a high-impact disaster like the Century 16 shooting requires specialized chaplaincy that addresses both the immediate crisis and the lingering effects of acute trauma. In his work following the event, Chaplain Wasmundt focused on key pillars of law enforcement support:

Critical Incident Debriefings: Facilitating safe, confidential spaces for first responders to process the intense sights, sounds, and psychological burdens of the scene.

Mitigating Cumulative Trauma: Assisting officers and dispatchers in identifying signs of post-traumatic stress and compassion fatigue in the days and weeks following the tragedy.

The Ministry of Presence: Offering steady, non-judgmental support to law enforcement personnel and their families as they navigated the complex aftermath of a major community tragedy.

Through his ongoing service with the Aurora Police Department and the Colorado State Patrol, Chaplain Andrew Wasmundt continues to dedicate his ministry to building resilience, supporting officer mental health, and standing alongside first responders in their hardest moments.
